Energy management

Development

Especially when it comes to integrating energy storage into decentralized generation parks, the energy management system (EMS) is crucial. There is a wide variety of EMS platforms and providers, each with very different target groups and individual strengths and weaknesses. The proprietary or OEM platforms of the respective energy component manufacturers often offer the simplest way to implement an EMS. However, these often provide only limited connectivity to third-party component suppliers and have a limited feature set. Open EMS, on the other hand, offer more flexibility but are often difficult to parameterize and maintain.

A good overview for the home area is provided by the HEMS finder.

Mit dem FlexEhome Daniel Wolf and his team have succeeded in supplying a residential building with locally sourced solar energy year-round. The key to this success is a hydrogen storage system that provides the necessary seasonal energy transfer, in conjunction with a specially developed energy management system that optimally utilizes long- and short-term storage and also integrates a heat pump, including a heat storage unit, bidirectionally and with power modulation into the overall energy management system.

Dimensioning

Decentralized energy systems consist of many individual components. They interact with each other, connecting demand with generation and storage, often across different energy sectors. Optimally designing and dimensioning such energy systems is therefore no easy task, especially when storage needs to be considered over multiple time periods, i.e., when short-, medium-, and long-term storage is required.

The starting point for appropriate storage design in the commercial and industrial sectors is always knowledge of the highest possible resolution of demand time series. These form the foundation for every design and must be reliably determined. If one or more time series are only partially available or not available at all, we can recalculate them from system balances or model them from scratch. Once this step is completed, we can begin. We then develop a complete digital twin of your initial situation and, in close consultation with you, determine possible use cases and business models. Based on this, we then determine the optimally dimensioned multi-use storage and generation portfolio.

It is important that the plant operation, including the multi-use business models, in the digital twin corresponds to what will then be implemented in reality. To ensure this, we work with the design tool specialists from minimum.energy together. Their design toolchain is currently the best in the industry to meet these requirements.

Consulting

Do you have your own ideas for a product or process in the field of energy storage? We would be happy to advise you.

In our industrial work prior to Solander, we developed several energy storage systems and products from TRL3 to market launch – both B2C and B2B. These include battery systems, thermal phase-change energy storage, compressed air energy storage power plants, and hydrogen storage systems. We would be pleased to share our experience in this field with you to help you turn your ideas into reality.

Are you looking to include energy storage systems from other manufacturers in your plant portfolio? We would be happy to advise you on the individual advantages and disadvantages of different components and manufacturers – not simply with generic, AI-generated assessments, but based on our many years of industry experience, our sector knowledge, and current scientific methods.
